The animal in this picture is NOT a dinosaur; he lived long before the very first dinosaurs. He is a different kind of animal altogether, and one that we don't have in the world any more. Do you know what a MAMMAL is? Do you know what a REPTILE is? This strange animal was both together at the same time. He is a kind of prehistoric creature called a MAMMAL-LIKE REPTILE, and his real name is Lystrosaurus (you say it "LISS-TRO-SAW-RUSS"). That means "Shovel Lizard", and can you see why he was given that name? His flat face looks the business end of a shovel! There were different kinds of Lystrosaurus: some grew to about the size of a Border Collie, others (much bigger) were about the size of a bull. They all had hard, horny beaks instead of teeth. They only had two teeth, which grew down the sides of their beaks like little tusks. Lystrosaurus used their beaks to eat plants, so they were also herbivores (remember the word from Dotty Dino?).
