Five-day Rock Art Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town to Bushmanskloof
Morning Depart Cape Town. Refreshments at Craig Royston, the original trading store overlooking the Olifants River. Walk to nearby rock art site.

Lunch: Clanwilliam Hotel. Explore Clanwilliam - the home of Rooibos Tea

Afternoon: Visit rock art site on the Pakhuis Pass. Continue over the pass to Bushmanskloof.

Day 2: Visit Sites on Bushmanskloof
Morning: Optional early morning game drive

Visit cluster of sites along the Boontjiesrivier. Of special interest are the White Net site, the Bleeding Nose site and the Fallen Rock Shelter which has a spectacular wall of paintings.

Lunch: Bushmanskloof

Afternoon: Visit sites in adjoining Valley including the recently discovered "Mother Goddess" site.

Optional late afternoon game drive

Day 3: Big Walk to Escarpment Cave or Relax at Bushmanskloof

Option 1: Short drive to neighbouring farm . Two hour walk to the top of the escarpment. There are several sites here with very well preserved art including famous Rhino images. Cross over the plateau and descend to a cave with long wall of dramatic eland paintings.and a panoramic view across the valley. An archaeological excavation has recently been conducted here. This has provided further insight into the lives of the San people of 2000 years ago.

Option 2: Relax at Bushmanskloof where there is a variety of activities including bird watching, game viewing, nature trails, mountain biking, canoeing, river walks, swimming, fly fishing or relaxing in library or bar where there is satellite TV and a billiard room.

Day 4: Visit Local Sites
Morning: Gentle walk along the rock art trail at Sevilla where there is a dense collection of sites. David Lewis-Williams, the renowned rock art theorist, has described Sevilla as one of the great rock art areas of the world.

Lunch: Picnic

Afternoon: Visit Salmanslaagte, an attractive location with a small stream running through the secluded valley. Paintings include the so called "Phoenician Ship" which later theorists have interpreted as trance phenomena, the so-called 'entopic' phenomena ; as well as large paintings of women and huge yellow elephants.

Day 5: Return to Cape Town via West Coast
Morning: Drive to Lamberts Bay to visit the Bird Island Nature Reserve on the Atlantic Coast.

Lunch: Seafood Restaurant outside Elands Bay

Afternoon: Visit Langebaan Lagoon. Site of the famous "Footsteps of Eve". Return to Cape Town.
