The reserve is a National Heritage Site that has been billed as the "world's largest open air gallery", containing 125 pristine rock art sites. It also has a large herd of the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra, 33 other species of animals, 170 bird species including raptors and 755 plant species. It was once home to the San, commonly known as Bushmen, who scientists agree are humanity's last living link to the Stone Age. Bushmanskloof won the Diners Club Merit Award in 1999 and 2000, and is renowned for its cellar of fine Cape wines, its sumptious Cape heritage food and comfortable ambience, It also has a state of the art telescope for star gazing.
