Rock Art Sites to Visit
1. Eldorado - (near Jamestown)
Visit this rock Art site; only 6 km off the "Friendly N6". A large fresco of this ancient art is reasonably accessible. Russel and Gerda Shorten. Viewing by appointment only. (05521) 993
2. Kapokkraal - Burgersdorp
Interesting site with well preserved pictures. Also evidence of the artists palettes where paints were mixed. Now the site is now in an arid area, the midden
contains freshwater mussel shell fragments telling of a time when wetter conditions provided a habitat for shell fish. Easily accessible, a gentle 1 km walk. 3. Sterkstroom Farm - off the N6
The turn off is only 6 km north of Aliwal North and 24 km of good gravel road. Requires the use of a vehicle to cover rough terrain. Very vivid colours and the paintings still have bright ochre colours, having been well protected from the elements. Doors Lombard. viewing by appointment only. (05572) 1230.
4. Leliekloof (Between Burgersdorp and Jamestown)
These sites are among the best available; set at a high altitude where temperatures are cool, close to a functioning cheese

5. Kalkoenkrans (near Aliwal North)
This site was the first such site in South Africa to be declared a National Monument because of the variety and standard of the work displayed. Note the elands' details. Marinus and Loretta de Bruin. Prior arrangements and bookings essential. (0551) 3164.
6. Anderson Museum ( in the town of Dordrecht)
A must for Rock Art enthusiasts with a dedicated room showing photographs of rock art sites from throughout the area. Additional site tours are available on request. Open on Mondays to Fridays from 9.00 to 12.00. The museum can be reached on (045) 9431105/

7. Burnbrae Mountain Hideaway- Barkley East
A five hour hiking trail goes to 6 rock shelters, 5 of which have rock paintings. A visit to the ancestral Sephton Cave is a must. It features examples of people with eland features and eland with human features. Paintings are well preserved but some have been damaged. Variety of accomodation available. 8. Balloch Garden Cottage - Barkley East
A number of spectacular sites can be visited . Accomodation available. Guided rock art and birding with picnic lunches.

9. Buttermead - Rhodes
A superb selection of rock art can be seen on the
farm Buttermead, 5 km out of Rhodes. Easily accessible by foot. The rock art is well preserved. You will be able to see the 'lightning bird".

10. Denorbin - Barkley East
This very large painted panel, some 32 metres, is literally at the bottom of the garden behind the farm house. The paintings are finely detailed, but may be difficult to see at certain times of the day as the background rock is dark. By appointment . Contact Denis Small. Tel: (045) 9312232
11. Rainbow Retreat - Ugie

12. Craigmore - Maclear

13. Chamisso - Maclear

14.Woodcliffe Trails - Maclear
You can visit a large painted site and a second one with far fewer paintings, but with sleeping accomodation. You can reach them either by vehicle or by a hiking trail. The paintings at the large site include a variety of subjects, some easier to see

15. Bultfontein - Lady Grey

17. Greenvale - Dordrecht
From Dordrecht travel 10 kms towards Indwe on the R56. Well preserved art featuring plenty of eland, hunting scenes and the rain dance. Viewing by appointment. Phone 045-9433042
18. Tiger Ridge - Dordrecht
From Dordrecht travel 5 km
towards Molteno on the R 56, then turn onto the Van Zylskraal road. Travel for 15 km. Easily accessible site containing eland, hunters, dancers and an ostrich. Viewing by appointment only.Tel: 045- 9433042.
19. Clarksdale - Dordrecht

20. Thaba Nkulu - Aliwal North
Of these sites at least three are easily and quickly accessible, while others demand some physical effort to be reached.There are a variety of paintings which include animals, people, and "maps". Contact Johnnie at (0551) 42450 or 0829210704
