Poster campaign protects Lesotho's rock art

The draft English version of the poster which will be widely distributed.

Pieter Jolley, an archaeologist based in Cape Town, became aware during his research on the rock art of Lesotho that rock art was being both vandalised and damaged. He therefore initiated this poster campaign in an attempt to educate the school children of Lesotho of the value and importance of the rock art.

Working in collaboration with the Archaeology Resource Development Project of Wits University and the Department of Tourism, Sports and Culture of Lesotho, the project takes an innovative approach. The poster uses a historical Sotho figure, the great sage Mohlomi, who was known for diplomacy and wisdom, to educate the children about San rock art. The understanding of rock art espoused by Mohlomi, uses Sotho traditions to explain the relevance of the rock art.

The funding for the project was provided by De Beer's and a radio campaign will be associated with the distribution of posters.

The schools that will be targeted are in the areas where there is existing rock art.

This will be the first in a number of educative posters on the theme of rock art education.
