Rock Art Journal Relaunched

PICTOGRAM, the only Southern African Rock Art Journal, is soon to be relaunched under the editorship of Dr. Anne Solomon.

The journal was founded by Mrs. Shirley-Ann Pager, whose late husband, Harald Pager, is known for his monumental work recording rock paintings in KwaZulu-Natal and Namibia. Shirley-Ann launched Pictogram in 1987, and it has grown into a substantial publication, with subscribers not only from southern African countries but from all around the world.

Shirley-Ann is no longer able to continue her pioneering work with Pictogram, and the editorship has now passed to Dr. Anne Solomon, Senior Curator of Archaeology at the Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg. (www.nmsa.org.za). Since 1987 Anne has specialised in San rock art in South Africa, and received her Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town in 1995. She is currently working on a major re-interpretation of San rock art, as well as an analytical project, in conjunction with scientists at the University of Natal, studying the composition of paints and technologies of painting. She has published her work extensively, both locally and internationally.

PICTOGRAM is a publication of SARARA, the Southern African Rock Art Research Association, which is an organisation dedicated to the recording, conservation and understanding of sub-Saharan Africa's extraordinary wealth of prehistoric rock paintings and engravings. Members are not only professional archaeologists; rock art enthusiasts from all kinds of backgrounds are the backbone of the Association. SARARA is a member of IFRAO, the International Federation of Rock Art Organisations. Visit their website at www.cesmap.it/ifrao/ifrao.html.

Membership of SARARA, which includes subscription to PICTOGRAM, is R75 per annum. Prospective members can join by submitting their membership fees to:
