The debate around the understanding of rock art in Southern Africa has often been heated and acrimonious. Debate has raged fiercely in the academic journals, with new models being propounded and old ones vigorously defended. Archaeologists, historians of art and amateur writers have all lined up on different sides of the theoretical debate and contributed to the confusion of voices. The same paintings and the same ethnographic material are reinterpreted from differing theoretical positions. Sometimes the reinterpretation of a phrase or word from the ethnographic record becomes the focus of the debate, while at its most extreme come accusations of forgery.
