Melville Koppies

caption

Archaeological evidence shows that the Koppies were occupied during for Middle and Later Stone Age and the Late Iron Age. Stone Age hand tools have been uncovered and the eastern Koppie is renowned for its two exposed Iron Age furnaces. Remnants of Sotho-Tswana stone-walled settlements can be seen. A small collection of Stone Age tools is on exhibit in the reserve and one of the later furnaces has been restored.

The western section of the reserve is open daily from dusk to dawn and is accessible from DF Malan Ave and the north end of 3rd Av Westdene.

The eastern section with the Iron Age furnace is open on the first and third Sunday afternoons of every month (3pm - 6pm) and the second Sunday morning, (9am to 12pm), except during June, July and August, when it is open mornings from 8:30am to 11:30am. The entrance can be found in Judith Road, Emmarentia, opposite the entrance to Marks Park. Parking is available in the Marks Park grounds.

Covering 67 hectares the area is home to many species of birds and over 200 species of flora. A nature trail winds through the reserve and can be accessed from 9th Avenue, Melville, or Zambezi Road, Emmarentia. The trail is marked with green arrows on rocks along the way. Maps of the trail are available at the entrance.
