Discover South Africa's Iron Age

In Gauteng:
Melville Koppies is renowned for its two exposed Iron Age furnaces. Remnants of Sotho-Tswana stone-walled settlements can also be seen in the nature reserve.

In the Northern Province:
Mapungubwe was the capital of a 13th-century nation state that had well-established links with the Indian Ocean trade routes.

At Thulamela, in the northern Kruger National Park, stone ruins of a royal citadel date back to the 15th century.

Makapansgat, near Potgietersrus, has a rich history dating back to earliest man. Excavations have also revealed Iron Age and Mfecane relics.

In Mpumalanga:
Outside Lydenburg, a hiking trail in the Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve leads to Early and Late Iron Age Pedi ruins.

In the North West:
Iron Age kraal foundations have been discovered in the Vredefort Dome Nature Conservancy, the site of a meteor strike 2 000 million years ago.
