In the Northern Province: At Thulamela, in the northern Kruger National Park, stone ruins of a royal citadel date back to the 15th century. Makapansgat, near Potgietersrus, has a rich history dating back to earliest man. Excavations have also revealed Iron Age and Mfecane relics.
